This is a story where you can see just how drastically different Toth’s work looks like with and without color. In this particular case, I enjoy the black and white version over the colored version. It goes with the overall tone of the story much better. However, in the color version, I enjoy the playfulness of what seems to be pure CMYK printing color. Something which you won’t see much of today in terms of coloring. In the b+w version I get the feeling of having claustrophobia. There’s so much graphic detail in the third and fourth pages, which i feel lends to this feeling. But it is Toth’s choice of including black gutters that really makes this piece so effective. I hope you enjoy the comparison. Maybe later I’ll post a page side by side. Enjoy!
Tomorrow we’ll round off the first story here on TOTHLOVE, The Land Unknown, and boy is it intense. Will they escape off the island? Everything is starting to heat up!
Id also like to to say thanks to those of you who have come from my other blog or happened to happily stumble upon it. The first followers are always important and I thank you for the early support. It means a lot to me. Theres a lot more to come and I hope you’ll enjoy it! Spread the word and share the tothlove!
TOTHLOVE.TUMBLR is a new blog i’ve made from my love of all things Alex Toth. If you love great comics I highly recommend following. He’s most well known for his character designs on cartoons such as Johnny Quest and Space Ghost, as well as ton of others. However, if you didnt know, Toth was also one of the best cartoonists in the field, making some of the most sophisticated and beautiful comics of his time . Following down the same path as Roy Crane, Noel Sickles, and Milton Caniff, Toth created a legacy of work, which should be looked at greatly in its own right. My goal with TOTHLOVE is to show a newer generation and the people on tumblr the work of an incredible artist, who i feel, is not shown enough. COME SHARE THE LOVE! ENJOY!
